Each product is constructed by blending new technologies and refurbished parts in a unique way while lowering the environmental impact of manufacturing. An added benefit is that each new design pays homage to great designers of the past and bridges the gap to the designers of now. Social Innovation & Cultural Knowledge (SICK) is a youth-centered, participatory, and peer-led collective. We undertake experiments, create events, engineer encounters, and facilitate actions and make products in order to build competencies, literacies, and knowledge that advance real human development opportunities for people. As an urban GTA collective that encourage transformative learning and social and economic justice, SICK builds solidarity with and support for under-serviced and under-privileged people.
We realize young people's futures have become sites of risk transfer in what is an increasingly post-employment and post-political environment of systemic and structural inequities for all people, who are all at-risk. We acknowledge some demographics enjoy more privilege than others, though we advocate for and appreciate the range of experiences and lived realities of all people, whose expertise and knowledge collectively design, program, and co-create SICK in common.
Contrary to reductive rhetoric about millennials and the me-generation, SICK believes people today have the abilities to change how we all think, whether socially, culturally, economically, and ecologically. Rather than dampen these capacities we change the game by working with, and in union with youthfull people. We're not interested in helping or rescuing; we're here to transform and empower.
SICK transforms physical and online spaces into micro-businesses and micro-factories that will house ongoing, content creation studios, podcasts studios, small batch manufacturing and eCommerce.
